Offering incredible notes of stone fruits, brioche, white flowers, and hints of toasted nuts, this flat out awesome wine is concentrated and opulent, yet still dances on the palate with vibrant acidity and great, great finish. It’s going to drink beautifully for another two to three decades. Bravo! This cuvee has only been made in 1976, 1979, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1998, 1999, 2002, and in 2007.”

“The NV Rosé Sauvage Brut has a dark salmon color (thanks to the 25% of red wine) and offers an intense, aromatic, almost meaty bouquet of red fruits (red currant, cherries) along with earthy, chalky, and yeasty brioche flavors. Vinous indeed on the nose! On the palate, this is a very fresh, clear and aromatic Rosé that comes a long as a sparkling red wine like Trollinger. It’s so charming, round and fresh but also dry and well-structured. The finish is clear, dry and cleansing, just gorgeous. This is a perfect Champagne to be served with fish, white meat, and even barbeque.”

“Piper-Heidsieck’s white-golden colored, NV Cuvée Brut has a clear, fresh, fine, and aromatic bouquet with sweet cherry but also brioche and chalky aromas. The attack on the palate is fresh and delicate, and the charming finish reveals brioche and whole grain as well as aromatic fruit flavors. This is a medium-bodied, stimulatingly fresh and well-structured blend with gorgeous fruit and a clean, persistent finish. I’d like to brunch with it every Sunday morning until the night comes.”

Ed McCarthy Rates Rare Rosé 98 Points

rare-rose-2007-bottle-200wEd McCarthy, author of Champagne for Dummies, had an opportunity to visit recently with PIPER-HEIDSIECK Chef de Cave Régis Camus, and came away impressed with the wines they tasted together, including the new Rare Rosé. He writes:

It debuted in Paris two weeks ago; I was fortunate to be the first U.S. wine writer to taste it two days ago, with Régis Camus in New York. In one word, it is…magnificent! The color is as gorgeous as I have seen in a Rosé Champagne: It is a deep salmon pink, just a bit tinged with orange and peach. It is luminous; the Rare Rosé truly stands out in the glass as soon as it is poured. We used perfectly shaped white wine glasses, which enhanced its aromas and flavors (avoid using flutes with this Champagne–or any quality Champagne, for that matter).

The most surprising quality of Piper’s Rare Rosé 2007 is its depth and concentration. Although 2007 is regarded as a good vintage in the Champagne region, it also has the reputation of being rather precocious, with its Champagnes being generally ready to drink soon. Not so the Rare Rosé, for sure. I asked Camus why he chose the 2007 vintage for the Rare Rosé debut. Camus replied that the grapes he chose–56 percent Chardonnay, 44 percent Pinot Noir, mainly from Grand Cru vineyards–were perfect for the Champagne he wanted to produce. The Rare Rosé is elegant, with great finesse. It is subtle, with subdued aromas at this point, but with a purity of concentrated fruit and amazing depth. I would think that it needs ten years to fully develop, and yet it will be enjoyable to drink within five years. I rate the Piper-Heidsieck Rare Rosé 2007 a 98.

The pale gold, greenish shimmering 2002 Rare Millesime – 30% Pinot Noir and 70% Chardonnay – offers a very intense and rich, yet fresh nose of exotic fruit aromas of pineapples, mango, kiwi and passion fruit. On the palate, this is a mouthful of luscious Champagne: powerful and intense, but pure and with the complexity of matured wines. The finish is very exotic in its fruit aromas, but also persistently mineral.

2006 Piper-Heidsieck Vintage Brut
92 points
Piper’s 2006 Vintage Brut – 51% Chardonnay and 49% Pinot Noir from 17 Premier and Grand Cru villages – opens with a very clear, intense and elegant nose of white fruit aromas. There are also aromas of brittle and chalk, indicating remarkable finesse and freshness. Full-flavored, silky textured and very elegant, this is a finesse-full and perfectly balanced cuvée, with nougat flavors and an intense, concentrated finish that reveals a stunning mineral backbone. Still pretty young, but of great elegance and finesse.
