Oscar News: Wine Spectator

Wine Spectator featured Piper-Heidsieck in the January 14, 2020 article Piper-Heidsieck Goes Gangster with Prohibition-Throwback Oscars Champagne Bottle by Shawn Zolberberg and Ben O’Donnell.

“Awards season is officially in full swing with the announcement of Oscar nominations on Monday morning, and we were on the scene bright and early to toast the noms with some 8 a.m. Champagne. For 2020, Piper-Heidsieck is reprising its role as official bubbly of the ceremony, and made an announcement of its own yesterday: a new limited-edition bottle that pays tribute to cinema in the Roaring Twenties. The label is a throwback replica of the one used by Piper during the Prohibition era, when selling such a wine stateside could’ve landed you in a cave d’incarcération.”

The article also featured an image and video of Piper-Heidsieck ambassador Jonathan Boulangeat sabering a magnum of the limited-edition bottle.

French champagne house Piper-Heidsieck is returning to the Dolby Theatre for a sixth showing as the sole champagne served during the Academy Awards on Feb. 9 as part of a long-term partnership between Piper-Heidsieck and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. For the event, Piper-Heidsieck is paying tribute to cinema with a limited-edition magnum bottle that will also nod to the 100th anniversary of Prohibition. The label on the house’s signature cuvée brut will be a replica of the one used during the Prohibition era, per Piper-Heidsieck.”

Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Returns for 92nd Oscars®

The French Champagne House Celebrates 100 Years Since Prohibition with Special Limited-Edition Bottle

Hollywood, CA (January 14, 2020) – Piper-Heidsieck, the revered French Champagne house known worldwide for its red label, is thrilled to announce its return as the sole Champagne to be served during the 92nd Oscars® awards season. This marks the sixth year of a long-term partnership between Piper-Heidsieck and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

One hundred years since the Eighteenth Amendment banned the sale of alcohol in the United States, Piper-Heidsieck is paying tribute to cinema in the Roaring Twenties with a limited-edition magnum to be served at this year’s Oscars. Featuring the House’s signature Cuvée Brut, the label will be a replica of the one used during the Prohibition era.

“In the 1920s, bootleggers would smuggle Piper-Heidsieck into the United States where it would be secretly served in speakeasys throughout New York City. Now, Hollywood’s biggest stars will get to enjoy the same Piper-Heidsieck Brut during the biggest awards show of the year,” declared Benoit Collard, General Manager for Piper-Heidsieck.

Piper-Heidsieck will be poured exclusively at the awards ceremony and Governors Ball, the Academy’s official Oscars after- party. In addition to the awards ceremony on February 9, Piper-Heidsieck champagne will be poured at Academy events in Los Angeles, New York and London, including the Oscar Nominees Luncheon on January 27.

97 Points
“A gorgeous wine that’s a legend in the making, the 2002 Rare Brut is a blend of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, with just under 10 grams of dosage. Offering incredible notes of stone fruits, brioche, white flowers, and hints of toasted nuts, this flat out awesome wine is concentrated and opulent, yet still dances on the palate with vibrant acidity and great, great finish. It’s going to drink beautifully for another two to three decades. Bravo! This cuvee has only been made in 1976, 1979, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1998, 1999, 2002, and in 2007.”

Piper-Heidsieck Rosé Millésime Rare Brut 2007
96+ Points
“Another sensational Champagne, as well as the first vintage for the cuvee, the 2007 Rare Rosé (56% Chardonnay and 44% Pinot Noir) offers that beautiful nuance and complexity you only get from top rosé Champagnes. Orange blossom, strawberries, spice, dried flowers, toasted bread, and orange peel notes all emerge from this richly concentrated, medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured 2007. With a fine, yet layered mousse, incredible complexity, and a great finish, this blockbuster effort will be better with 2-3 years of bottle age and shine for 10-15 years or more.”
